PowerPoint is 25 years old!

Many happy returns to PowerPoint which was created 25 years ago.

On August 14th 1984, the initial two-page brief for a computer programme to produce presentation graphics for overhead presentation was drawn up. And PowerPoint was born. Created by Robert Gaskins and Dennis Austin, it was originally available only on the Apple Mac and was called Presentation.

What else was happening around this time in 1984?

In the news, Zola Budd appeared to trip another runner at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles, the UK and China agreed to the handover of Hong Kong and the Tory Cabinet was bombed in a Brighton bomb blast. In music, Culture Club were singing Karma Chameleon, Cyndi Lauper was a girl just wanting to have fun and Stevie Wonder just called to say he loved me. We were watching Beverly Hills Cop and Ghostbusters at the cinema and Hill Street Blues and Cheers on the television.

It seems a long time ago, doesn’t it?

So, 25 years of death by PowerPoint.

PowerPoint has come a long way since then, but still is overused and clichéd in most peoples hands. I wonder what the next 25 years will bring.
